Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus as the 9th BNM Governor

Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus has been named the new Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor, the second woman to hold the position after Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
Her appointment is effective July 1, 2018 until June 30, 2023.
She takes over from Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim, who resigned early this month before completing his five-year term, after his appointment in May 2016.
Kampung Baru-born Nor Shamsiah, 54, the fifth in a family of six, joined the central bank in 1987.
Rising through the ranks, she became assistant Governor in December 2004 before being appointed as deputy Governor in November 2010 upon the retirement of Datuk Zamani Abdul Ghani, and was re-appointed to the same post in 2013.
She left the central bank in November 2016 to join the International Monetary Fund, the same year that Zeti finished her tenure as Governor in April.
Nor Shamsiah holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy from the University of South Australia and is a Fellow of the Australian CPA.
She has extensive experience in developing regulations, policies and guidelines for the banking sector and was also involved in financial sector resolution initiatives during the Asian financial crisis as well as in the implementation of the Financial Sector Masterplan for the development of the Malaysian financial system from 2001 to 2010.
She was also involved in the investigation into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) while at the bank.
Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus has been appointed as the new Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) for a term of five years effective from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng announced yesterday.
Lim said the Ministry of Finance (MoF) has been instructed to announce that the Yang diPertuan Agong had on June 19, 2018 granted his royal consent to the recommendation of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to appoint Nor Shamsiah as the new Governor.
“The Prime Minister forwarded his recommendation on June 18, 2018 to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that Datuk Nor Shamsiah be appointed as the BNM Governor for a term of five years effective from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023,” he said at a press conference in Putrajaya here, yesterday.
She takes over from Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim, who resigned early this month before completing his five-year term, after his appointment in May 2016.
Nor Shamsiah was the Deputy Governor of BNM from 2010 until 2016.
She recently served as Assistant Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Division of the International Monetary Fund.
As Deputy Governor, she was responsible for banking, insurance and takaful supervision, financial intelligence and enforcement, talent management, finance and shared services of the central bank.
Nor Shamsiah joined BNM in 1987 and has served in various areas including prudential regulations, legislation, policies and guidelines for the financial sector and supervision.

New BNM Governor replacing Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz in April 2016

Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz
Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz will be stepping down as her last term will end this April. This is the report that she told newsman after the launch of Integrated Account Platform (IAP) recently at Sasana Kijang.
Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz today refused to reveal any information on the identity of her successor following her last term as the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia.
Zeti's contract will end in April and she added, that she will not stay on for another term as the Bank Negara's Governor.
She, however, said the announcement on her successor would be made soon.
"In due time, you will be informed. There is a process for it and you have to be patient," Zeti told newsmen after the launch of the Integrated Account Platform (IAP), an Islamic banking investment platform at Sasana Kijang today.
She reiterated that the process of appointing a new Governor will take time because it had to be done meticulously and in depth.
Zeti explained, that the process of finding her successor is being undertaken by the Governance Committee of the BNM Board which comprises independent directors from the private sector.
This was to ensure her successor has all the required qualifications and criteria.
Zeti said the people need not worry on the issue of her successor because Bank Negara would remain a solid institution.

Well, for me personally this is a welcomed news because that means we will finally be having a new signature of the new Governor on the next issues/series of Malaysian Banknotes! And hopefully the Zeti's signed notes will get more valuable.

Zeti, 64, telah memegang jawatan Gabenor BNM sejak Mei 2000 dan sepanjang menerajui bank pusat tersebut, beliau telah menerima beberapa anugerah kerana prestasinya.

In my humble opinion, I would have preferred a new Bank Governor because I am getting bored seeing the same signature for 10 years. What is your say about this?
