Part 1 - Bookends - Categories of Fancy Banknotes Number

Bookends

Bookends occur when the same sequence of digits can be found at both ends of the serial number. For example, in the serial number 52194521, "521" is the sequence of digits occuring at both the beginning and end of the number and are called "bookends." Serial numbers 62043620 and 14555514 are bookend notes as is the example shown below (20516320). -via ebay

Oh u can see the above banknotes here.

I have collected this kind of money but I just recently knew the correct term to categories these kind of notes. Cheers.

Banknotes hunting 12.11.11

I am suppose to do this banknotes hunting on the auspicious day of 11.11.11 but due to work commitment I only have time to go out today. I went to Wisma Merdeka to look into Malaysian banknotes that I might be interested in. One note that caught my attention is RM100 4th Aziz Taha but the price is RM1.8k, if the price is around RM1.1k to 1.5k maybe I can make an offer, which I did and was kindly decline.

So I ended buying these notes:

The RM5 blindman is the prefix NA,NB,NC,ND and the Aziz Taha is prefix PE 3 running numbers. While the RM100s is in EF-AUNC condition, the RM50 is VF and I got it for a little above face value.

Can anyone take a guess of what the price of ALL the item in the picture above? Take a guess no harm done and maybe a prize if u got it absolutely right. Hahahaha

Cheers and happy school holidays!

RM20 Jaffar Hussein VF Prefix TF

Personally I like the RM20 design and color, maybe I am biased because brown or earth color is my favorite color too. This RM20 note bearing the signature of Governor Jaffar Hussein with the first prefix TF is harder to find compared to TG prefix. So getting one for good price is always a catch for me.

Cheers and happy collecting!

RM10 Fourth Series X/1 Replacement VF

Although it is only in VF condition (that is my based on my newbie opinion), this note is the replacement note for 4th series Malaysian RM10 banknotes. I have found EF piece selling for around RM350-RM450 and UNC going for as high as RM650.

This note is for sale here: X/1 RM10 4th Series VF

Cheers.

Radar and Repeating number RM1 Zeti Aziz

I found this rather interesting piece of RM1 with the prefix ADD 9797979.
This find is what make this hobby interesting. While others only view this piece valued at RM1, we as collectors accept it is more valuable than it's face value.

Cheers.

$1 Malaya & British Borneo 1959 Waterlow prefix A/1

I acquire this note not long ago, the condition might be at best VF but what I like about this note is the fact that it's prefix is A/1. And I know there is some collector who dig anything with A/1 Prefix. So this is collectable for any acceptable condition.

Reverse:

Oh ya, the above note is for sale here at my facebook sales page.

Malaysian Extra dot coin complete list

Since I found a circulated but still in good very condition extra dot 50 cent 1979 about 2 weeks ago, I was very interested in adding more. I make a simple research about extra dots coin particularly Malaysian coins. I don't have the 5 cent 1982 extra dot yet.

The list of extra dot coins in the Malaysian Parliment First Series are:

5 cent 1982 Extra dot(On Parliment House) - Unc - RM150

50 cent 1979 Extra dot(On the Ground Building) - Unc - RM160

50 cent 1988 Extra dot (On Parliment House) - Unc - RM60
So if you have these coins in your collection, please take a closer look if there is an extra dot. Don't get it wrong though, not all of these coin on the above year got extra dot, that's why it is valued more.

Cheers.

New Malaysia Coins- Malaysian Coin Third Series 2012

New Malaysia Coins
The designs of the third series of Malaysian coins draw its inspiration from distinctive elements that define Malaysian culture and heritage. The theme, 'Distinctively Malaysia', features motifs from traditional crafts and our flora and fauna. The coins reflect the diversity and richness of Malaysia's national identity.

Common Features

On the obverse, each denomination features a different motif, 14 dots representing the 13 states and the Federal Territory and (with exception in the case of the 50 sen coin) five horizontal lines representing the five principles of the 'Rukun Negara' (national pillars).

On the reverse, the new series of coins feature the national flower Rosa-sinensis hibiscus (known as the 'Bunga Raya'), numerals indicating the year of minting, the face value of the coin and the words 'BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA'.

The video : Third Series of Malaysian Coins- Distinctively Malaysia

The new series of coins will be legal tender beginning in 2012 and will co-circulate with the existing series. The existing series will be gradually phased out. Bank Negara Malaysia is working closely with financial institutions, businesses and cash handling vendors to ensure a smooth transition to the new series. Vendors of cash handling machines will be given six months to calibrate their machines to ensure convenience for the use of the new coins.

In my opinion the 50 cent is quite smaller than the current one, and it is going to be harder to differentiate the size between the 50 and 20 cents when you are going through you coins in the pocket while not looking at it. Haha but the design is beautiful and nice.

Cheers

A simple guide to Collecting Malaysian Coin 1967-2011

I was asked by a friend of mine that is beginning to take an interest in collecting Malaysian coins on which coin is worth more than the others. So here is what I told him to look for:

1971 10 cent coin UNC

1 cent 1970 (Mintage: 2.3 Million)
5 cent 1971
5 cent 1977
10 cent 1971 (Mintage: 32K, UNC/BU is around RM240-RM290)
10 cent 1994
10 cent 2003
20 cent 1970 (Mintage: 1.0 Million)
20 cent 1971 (Mintage: 9.9 Million)
20 cent 1994 (Mintage: 2.6 Million)
50 cent 1967
50 cent 1968
50 cent 1969 (Mintage: 2.0 Million)
50 cent 1995 (Mintage: 1.6 Million)

Note: Parliament Series (1967-1988), Bunga Raya Series (1989-2011) The mintage above was taken from Peter Eu's Malaysia Coins & Banknotes 2010 reference book.

If you have or found any of these coins, it is worth keeping it. Maybe it is time for you to break that old piggy bank and start searching! Good luck. Maybe you can find a circulated 1971 10 cent just like me.

Cheers.

The Basics of Coin and Banknotes Collecting

Numismatics is the science, study or collection of coins, medals, tokens, banknotes and other similar objects. Believed to be the oldest hobby in the world, people have been collecting coins for as long as coins have been known to exist. The Roman Emperors are known to have collected coins from the Greek Empire, more than two thousand years ago.

Money, in the form of coins, has been used since the seventh century B.C. The words money and mint are derived from the name of the Roman Goddess Juno Moneta, in whose temple the Romans built a workshop for making coins. From that time, it became common usage to call places where coins were made 'Moneta'.
For some, coin collecting is a hobby, for others a driving passion and for yet more, a rewarding investment avenue. For all of them, coin collecting is a challenging and satisfying pastime, and one in which anyone can be involved, no matter how big or small the budget.

There are many different reasons why people choose to collect coins. Some collect coins and banknotes because their father have the same hobby. Some acquire pieces to appreciate their beauty, building a valuable heirloom which can be passed on to future generations. Others appreciate the history behind the coins, documenting the lives and times in which the coins were used, and reflecting changes in societies, cultures and technology. Through them, we are able to trace many facets of history.

1971 10 cent Malaysian Coin, only 32K mintage

There was once a time when a coin's value was determined by the quantity and type of precious metal it was made from. More recently, production techniques and the use of base metals have broadened these factors to include:
  • Rarity - the current supply of the coin;

  • Condition - the grading of the coin;

  • Desirability - the demand, popularity and interest among collectors; and

  • Economic Outlook - the condition of the economy and particularly, the effects of inflation.

The Basics of Coin and Banknotes Collecting

A novice collector can be easily confused by the variety of items available, and will often rely on the integrity of the seller. Is this a wise move ? Why would buyers or sellers in the numismatic marketplace possess any more scruples than players in any other market ? The answers are simple. Don't rely on the integrity or advice of a single source and don't make impulsive decisions. The greater the investment, the more you should research an item before making the commitment to purchase or sell it. A huge repository of information and reference material has accumulated over the decades providing intricate details on all aspects of numismatics and numismatic material. There are many dealers, coin clubs and quality publications available, all offering valuable information.

1. Buy the best quality that you can afford.

It is a well established fact that poor quality coins rarely, if ever, make money in the world of numismatics. If you want to make real money, it has to be with quality coins, a fact often hard for the novice collector to accept.

2. Buy coins and banknotes in the best condition obtainable.

Where more than one example of a coin type is on offer, look to purchase the best one rather that the cheaper, lower quality ones. A coin with just the slightest amount of wear can often be worth many times less than its pristine counterpart. Investment history has shown that higher quality coins appreciate at a faster rate than lesser quality ones.

3. Be prepared to hold coins and banknotes for a long period.

Apart from short-run newly released items, it is unusual for coins to significantly increase in value in just a few days or weeks. Established collectible coins may take three years or more to show worthwhile gains. Some coins display steady gains of 10% to 30% per year, while other 'sleepers' may be relatively dormant until a shift in market awareness causes a sudden price rise. It is important to monitor the market while you hold coins for investment. The best way to do this is by attending auctions and sales rooms, by acquiring and examining current, quality numismatic publications and by comparing asking prices wherever they are offered with the coins in your portfolio. Reputable coin dealers will help here, with purchase advice and to keep you informed of price movement. However, it is best to perform the bulk of the work yourself. You will retain your dealer's friendship and sanity, and gain a great deal of satisfaction from your investment.

RM1 Ali Abul signed

4. Don't spend until you can afford to.

Put another way, treat investments in coins as a luxury. Don't strain your budget to pay for any type of investment. More often than not, strained budgets lead investors to sell at the wrong time, and as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, soon afterwards the item will forge ahead in value. Budget planning should be part of a strategy to ensure that you can keep the coins until you wish to sell, not until you are forced to sell.

Hopefully you have a better understanding of what Numismatic really is.

Cheers

Malaysia 50 cent/Sen 1979 Extra Dot coin found

Hai, Selamat berpuasa and happy holidays. This type of coin is something that I am very happy to find because of the year 1979( the year that I was born) and also because it doesn't cost a thing. I found it when receiving my change from Giant Superstore.

The dot is so small it can be seen from the pictures above but it is there i am sure. Some seller are selling it for RM15, RM20, RM30 and some are even selling RM80 for an UNC piece. So to be able to found one is just nice. :)

Happy Hari Raya celebration to all my numis friend! Where is my kuih raya?

Malaysia 2nd series 2011 coin set

While others are already having multiple sets of this 2011 Malaysian coins, I just managed to complete mine with the addition of the 50 cent.

Some say the 50 cent 2011 can/will be a bit scarce because next year we will be using a new coin series already.

Cheers.

10 cent 1971 found while paying for my mihun goreng seafood!

Here is the story:

I was scrambling my pocket for loose change to pay my RM6.10 bill (mihun goreng seafood + milo kosong) when I stumbled upon this 10 cent Malaysian parliment coin. Considering it was a parliament I decided not to give it to the waiter, a friend of mine volunteer to help me using a bunga raya coin (that what a friend is for).

Only after paying it that I realized that the 10 cent parliament I was holding is from 1971. I immediately burst into laughter since it is very hard to find it in any condition and what more I am that close from using it.

The coin is in good condition without any dent or deep scratch but it is in dark color due to stains. I am not so sure if cleaning the coin is a good idea. Anyone can help?

Well, this find surely makes my day. I am smiling  from work to home. :)

Cheers

My First Uncut Malaysian Banknotes

I bought my first Uncut banknotes recently for a very reasonable price. It is RM5 Ali Abul with AA Prefix 3 in 1 uncut without folder. I never bought any uncut banknotes until now because I thought it is hard to keep uncut compared to normal notes where you can just put it in the banknotes album.

So what do you think about uncut notes? Do you like to keep them?

 Cheers.

RM10 Zeti sign missing security thread

I found this RM10 Zeti sign missing security thread in circulation yesterday and I was wondering if this note has been tempered with or is in original shape. I found out this kind of note is not listed in Peter Eu reference book.
I went to an antique shop and found that a seller is selling RM180 for an UNC piece.

Maybe some of the more senior and experienced collector can give me some information.

Cheers and thank you for you comments!

Bank Negara Malaysia to Issue New Series of Banknotes and Coins 2012

Bank Negara Malaysia is pleased to announce that a new series design of Malaysian banknotes and coins will be issued for circulation in early 2012, an exercise that is undertaken periodically every twelve years. The theme of the design of the new currency series will include features that are distinctively Malaysia. It will also have enhanced security elements in line with the latest advancements in technology for currency notes.

The new fourth series design of banknotes will be featured in the denomination of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100. The current design of the RM50 banknote already in circulation since December 2007 to commemorate Malaysia’s 50th Anniversary of Independence will continue to remain in circulation. The new design coins are the third in the series for the denominations of 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen. This new series of banknotes and coins will co-circulate with the existing series until the latter are gradually withdrawn from circulation.

In preparation for the issuance of the new currency series, Bank Negara Malaysia will be working closely with financial institutions, businesses and cash handling vendors to ensure a smooth transition to the new series. Vendors of cash handling machines will be given six months to calibrate their machines to ensure public convenience for the use of the new currency.

As part of the effort to increase public awareness on the new currency series, Bank Negara Malaysia will issue the commemorative coins for the third series and unveil the new fourth series banknotes design in the third quarter of 2011.

I personally is looking forward to see the new banknotes and coins design. I hope the design will be more attractive than the current one. I am not sure whether there will be any polymer notes coming out in this design. I also welcome the step to re-introduce the RM20 notes(last time it was in my favorite color which is brown)

My RM50 Malaysian Banknotes Collection

Although my collection consist mainly of VF and EF conditioned banknotes, I am still satisfied to finally put together at least one of the notes from 1st to 12th series. If luck and money permits, maybe I can slowly upgrade the condition to UNC in the future.
plus another 2 piece of RM50:
It has been a long journey to complete the series. But the joy and satisfaction that comes with it is what makes this hobby interesting. Some hardcore collector will find first prefix, last prefix in the series but for me that is a long way to go because it is not cheap.

So, hopefully I will complete my RM100 collection before CNY next year. Cheers.

RM1 ZG ZH ZJ ZK ZL ZM ZN ZP ZQ ZR ZS ZT ZU ZV 14pieces Zeti Paper Money. Is it replacement banknotes?

This is a very peculiar notes because the prefix starts with Z but it is maybe not a Malaysian replacement note. The condition is from AUNC ...
